Pepe is our spoiled chihauha. He had this picture taken a few hours before our wedding in July by our photographer. Lately, as in over the past few months, he's been obsessed with getting in bed with us at night. We probably wouldn't mind except that for a 10 lb dog, he takes up a lot of space and we never get a good nights sleep with him in bed. He used to never sleep in bed or even jump on the bed without permission. But then we took him back to the east coast for the summer. DH and I went to China for two weeks after the wedding and his parents kept Pepe during that time so Pepe spent the whole summer on Martha's Vineyard with them and DH so he could get used to having other people walk him and feed him. So Pepe ended up being away from AZ for about 3 months. When we came back, he was very clingy and we thought he was just readjusting to home. We moved to a new place within 3 weeks of coming back to AZ so of course he was clingy again when we moved. He has valley fever and that flared up again not long after we moved so we tried to keep a close eye on his health at that time and wanted to keep him close by. But now he just won't leave us alone! DH has put a baby gate around the bed in hopes of trying to keep him from jumping up at night but he makes so much noise trying to get onto the bed that he wakes us up anyway. He's curled up on the bed right now as we speak. What are we going to do with this little guy?

Just spoiled rotten:) Some habits are just hard to break. Tough love maybe the answer, don't give in to his whinning, make sure he has another comfortable place to sleep and sooner or later he will get used to sleeping alone.
Oh, this story just breaks my heart. I cuddle with both of my dogs during the day, but night time is off limits. You may need to kennel him at night, even if he throws a fit. Or he may be keeping you from sleeping peacefully. What a hard habit to break, but it can be done.
Hopefully a few weeks of him not having access to the bed will get him on the right track. We've never had him in a crate but he does have little beds made in our room. DH put together some boxes and filled them with Pepe's blankets. He sleeps in there until around 3 am and for some reason he then decides he wants to come to our bed. I only hope this will stop soon!
SadieMae and I began at PetSmart, they are ok and a good beginning. What helped me the most was to contact the Basset Rescue and begin to talk to people about her behavior.
She was incorrigible by then that I had to hire an at home trainer. We still backslide, and when we do it seems that it takes us longer to get back on track.
If you have a crate/kennel throw a towel over him at night you would do a bird, seems to quiet them down.
